We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lyric Amodia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lyric , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
In navigating professional spaces where I often find myself as the only one who looks like me, being a young, black Filipina woman, I’ve learned to embrace the challenges as opportunities for growth. My journey has taught me the importance of resilience and self-confidence.
Being young and ambitious in business comes with its own set of obstacles. People may underestimate my abilities, but I use this as fuel to dream big and prove them wrong. The key for me is to envision success and manifest it through my actions. I trust my ideas and myself, even if it means making revisions or facing failures. I see failure as a stepping stone, a way to learn and grow.
While I may be the only one in the room who looks like me, I understand the significance of paving a new path not just for myself but for future generations. This perspective motivates me to persist. I want to make it easier for those who come after me, so they don’t feel alone or face the same challenges.
The unwavering support from my community is a constant reminder that I’m not alone in this journey. Believing in myself and having others believe in me propels me forward. My success is not just for personal fulfillment but a testament to what is possible for others who aspire to navigate similar paths.
In essence, my approach involves dreaming big, maintaining resilience, and contributing to a positive change that goes beyond my own journey. I strive to be a beacon of inspiration and support for those who might face similar circumstances in the future.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the founder and executive director of The Movement Street, where I serve as a movement strategist. My passion is to turn my dedication into a full-time commitment and make The Movement Street a household name. What sets my work apart is the transformative power of creativity to unite communities and create meaningful change.
Currently, I am also an educator, making an impact both inside the classroom and out in the streets. Armed with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Howard University and currently pursuing my MBA at the University of Maryland, my overarching goal is to address the racial wealth gap. I aspire to help people of color build generational wealth and consult with businesses to foster growth.
As someone raised overseas, I have a keen interest in leveraging my organization’s reach to make a global impact. I am excited about combining my love for travel with my commitment to community development. The Movement Street is not just a local initiative; it’s a platform that transcends borders, providing assistance wherever it’s needed.
One of our upcoming highlights is ‘The Creative Classic,’ a signature event scheduled for February 24, 2024. This annual activation is more than just a showcase; it’s a fusion of local art and activism. The Creative Classic has grown each year, featuring an array of pop-up shops, artists, performers, and fashion designers, all set against a unique theme at a new location.
What makes The Creative Classic truly special is its dual purpose – it’s a celebration of creativity, community, and collaboration, and at the same time, it serves as a fundraiser for HBCU scholarships. This event is a testament to the thriving art, activism, and business community in DC. I invite everyone to join us in supporting and elevating local talent while contributing to a meaningful cause at this extraordinary event. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, discipline, consistency, and curiosity have been the driving forces behind my success. Establishing a disciplined routine, staying consistent in my efforts, and fostering curiosity to learn and embracing failure have been pivotal. My advice for those starting their journey is to commit to a routine aligned with goals, prioritize consistency over perfection, and maintain an open-minded curiosity. Embrace challenges as learning opportunities, read widely, and be comfortable stepping outside your comfort zone. Success often stems from hard work, consistency, and a continuous pursuit of knowledge and improvement.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
